Rebuilding Ireland
Rebuilding Ireland, An Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness was published by the government in July 2016. Key actions to be taken were set out under five pillars: Addressing Homelessness; Accelerate Social Housing; Build More Homes; Improve the Rental Sector and Utilise Existing Stock. This was in direct response to the housing crisis which currently grips Ireland. Social housing waiting lists have surged in recent years and as of June 2017, 1,365 families are classed as homeless. Dublin in particular has seen skyrocketing rents due to the lack of affordable accommodation.
A year on, State investment and supply-side initiatives are having a positive impact on the number of new homes becoming available to rent or buy. In 2016, over 19,000 social housing solutions were delivered and it is looking likely that 21,000 will be delivered this year.
Challenges remain
However, given the exceptional disparity between supply and demand, a significant challenge remains. Legacy issues also remain due to the economic crash – with a level of mortgage arrears significantly more than the European norm, and demographic changes in Ireland have continued to put pressure on the system. This conference will look at what additional measures will be required, update delegates on the important work already completed or underway and focus on the way forward to ensure we are able to meet housing needs both now and in the future.
Focused conference
This conference will focus on the challenges that lie ahead and discuss the way forward to ensure we are able to tackle the housing crisis. It will bring together the key stakeholders with an interest or role in housing in Ireland and attract a good attendance from across the sector.
